Let the pan become safe to handle
Allow the cookware to cool from cooking heat, but clean it before residue has had time to dry firmly onto the surface.

Wash without soaking
Use warm water and a soft brush or non-abrasive scrubber. Avoid leaving cast iron submerged in water.

Dry completely
Wipe the pan, then warm it briefly over low heat until all remaining moisture has evaporated.

Apply a trace of oil
While the pan is warm, spread a very small amount of cooking oil over the surface and wipe away any visible excess.

Store in a dry place
Let the pan cool and store it where moisture cannot collect. If stacking cookware, place a dry cloth or paper between pieces.
